HOW I MASTERED PACKING LIGHT

Well sort of…

I’m always looking for ways to pack light with the use of only my Carry-On. Over the years of travelling, I’ll like to think I’ve come a far way from what I used to be. I use to be the girl that practically brings her entire wardrobe when she goes travelling. I mean one week away would include my checked luggage, my carryon and personal hand bag. The best part is that I would come back home with more than half unworn. Thank God I’ve come to the realization that I do not need my entire wardrobe to feel comfortable that I have brought everything I need.

The turning point for me was when I went backpacking throughout South America. I remember buying my backpack and thinking how will all my clothes fit in one bag and if I bring too much will it kill my back. I knew I had to be strategic about what I needed to bring, so I did some research and I made sure I planned ahead. I must say it took some practice as it certainly did not come overnight for me but I’ve thus learnt that there are many advantages to packing light.

No longer have to deal with lost luggages, baggage fees or overweight scares. Faster service and less time at the airport are bonuses as I no longer need to check in a luggage, drop off a luggage or wait on my luggage.

So far, this is what I’ve learnt and has since helped me pack lightly throughout my travels.

PLAN AHEAD: This includes knowing what activities are planned or what you’re interested in so that you may pack in accordance. Planning ahead helps so much with knowing what to bring as you’ll know what to wear for each occasion. If you cannot plan ahead bring clothing where you can mix and match or just take photos from the head up. Selfies are in!
As you can tell, packing light is so much more than just finding the lightest carry-on.

PACK AHEAD OF TIME: I normally do this because last minute packing stresses me out. When I pack ahead of time I can roll my clothes and organize them neatly, take my time and not forget anything. Not to mention I have time to think about what I don't need and give my reasons as to why I should take it out of my carry-on. Be careful this step may also be dangerous as some times you may keep adding. So if this is you, you might want to skip out on this step.

MINIMIZE LIQUIDS: Instead of bring the entire shampoo bottle, lotion or toothpaste tube. Purchase 100ml or under 100ml containers and bottles to store the liquids needed for your travels. Another option is to not bring any. Most of these items can be purchased abroad if your sensitivity level is low as you may not find the product you're use to using. Minimizing liquids is another reason why packing ahead of time can be beneficial.

TRAVEL CUBE: The use of travel cubes saves lives and frees up space. Not to mention its very handy to cary around whether you're staying at a hotel or hostel. You’ll be able to put all your liquid bottles, makeup, and anything else other than your electronics and clothes into this cube that you may need.

LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF SHOES: Try to pack fewer shoes as they take up space in your luggage. Wear your heaviest shoes always and pack your slippers. For example, I normally have one pair of runners, one pair of heels and one to two slippers/ sandals.

BRING WHAT YOU NEED: DO NOT PACK OPTIONS!!!! If you plan on wearing a certain outfit for an occasion stick to that outfit. The best way to do this is to plan and pack ahead. Always remember your space is limited and try to leave a little space that way you can bring back souvenirs. I know we all love our Souvenirs.

SIDE NOTE
  1. Don’t forget to check the weather and excursions planned. Packed based on needs
  2. Own a few Carabiners. You can always clip on your water bottle, extra shoes, plane pillow, etc if need be.
  3. No matter where you are going in the world always packs a pair of long pants and sweater or sweatshirt. You never know when you’ll need it.
  4. Always pack your electronics and valuables with the luggage piece that stays with you.

Please leave a reply in the comment section if you have any additional tips. It would be greatly appreciated.

BOM DIA BRAZIL

Waking Up in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia RIO DE JANEIRO, RIO DE JANEIRO My first time visiting Rio de Janeiro was back in 2015. School was out and I would spend the next month and a bit backpacking South America. First up was Rio. I fell in love with this place the moment I arrived in its beauty and lets be honest my first Caipirinha. Lost in translation, not being able to communicate with most people and even with the airline loosing my luggage which meant I would spend the next few hours or days in Toga wear was all apart of the journey. From the meat (huge meat lover), the people, the environment and the vast amount of options I had at my hands, I knew I would visit again. This time I was able to journey back to Rio and for the first time, Salvador. Of course I loved it too, especially more so now that I had help! José was my voice box as he speaks fluent Portuguese. I didn’t realize until that moment how much of a difference speaking a main language in a country would...

10 PERSONAL FACTS ABOUT ME

I would consider myself a Cultural Explorer, Budgeter, Free Spirit and an Organized traveller. In other words, “I’m Frugal”, a big wise spender.  I’m a music lover and being from Jamaica you’d assume I love Dancehall and Reggae everyday and anyday. Well, Afrobeats is the filling in my oreo. I’m in love with Dancehall first, then Afrobeats then comes Reggae unless we talking about Buju Banton, he comes first. I’m a “Parents Girl”. If you’ve met them you’ll understand. I cannot choose, not that we should have to anyways. I ran Track & Field throughout my school days, mostly 100 meters. Wanting to focus more on my studies, I decided to quit after first year university and boy has it been hard to get back in the gym and running again. My favourite sport athletes are Serena Williams and Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce. Surprise I did not say Usain Bolt.  I’m a watch lover, never buy my right size online shopper, and neat freak! My car is probably the cleanest car you’l...

The Grotto: Bruce Peninsula National Park

As seen in the above photograph you probably thought I was somewhere in the Caribbean. Nope! This would be the beautiful Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada. Yes! Canada. I could not believe how crystal clear the water was, it made you want to just jump in. The Peninsula genuinely took me away. I forgot where I was but then remembered oh so quickly that yes I was in Canada. The water was freezing cold! It probably took about 8 minutes if not more for my body to adjust to bear the cold so that I could stay in the water longer. Currently, the park entrance is free to celebrate Canada 150. Which means you have to arrive early if wanting to visit the Grotto. Time slots are given for parking access inside the Grotto area know as Cyprus Lake and are given to first come first serve visitors. These parking passes last for 4 hours (be sure not to spend longer to avoid ticketing).  I arrived at the park exactly at 10 am and ended up getting a 5pm - 9pm parking pass to vi...
